WWF-Cambodia and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) took a historic leap forward today, 30 October 2024, in their efforts to preserve Cambodia's natural environment. The two parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), outlining their plans to work together on conservation and development initiatives for the next five years. The momentous occasion symbolises an exciting new chapter for both WWF and the national government, as they expand their opportunities for environmental protection and sustainable development .

The newly formalised partnership will focus its shared initiatives in Cambodia’s northeast region. In particular, they hope to promote sustainable management of fisheries in the Upper Mekong River while conserving key marine species like the Irrawaddy dolphin. The MoU also highlights the development of community-based organisations and agroforestry livelihoods as a priority of the collaboration. Both parties also highlight a focus on research and monitoring efforts to understand local biodiversity and the socio-economic conditions shaping Cambodia.

Both WWF and MAFF expressed their deep gratitude and enthusiasm for the agreement in a signing ceremony this morning. WWF-Cambodia’s Country Director, Mr. Arun Muttreja, concluded today’s speech by emphasizing that the MoU represented more than a formalised agreement. “It is a shared vision for the future of Cambodia’s Northeast region,” he said. “It represents our commitment to the people of Cambodia, to the protection of their natural heritage, and to the promotion of sustainable, equitable development.”

"The signing of this MoU marks an essential step forward in our collaboration with WWF-Cambodia," said H.E. Dith Tina, the Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. "Together, we have already achieved significant milestones, including the successful conservation of Cambodia’s iconic dolphins, and this MoU strengthens our commitment to further advancing conservation and sustainable development. We will continue to expand our efforts to protect natural resources and ensure a sustainable future for the communities that depend on them.

Today’s event brings WWF-Cambodia one step closer to fulfilling its mission: building a future in which people live in harmony with nature. Working in tandem with the government and other stakeholders is the way towards this vision.
